Happy Fourth of July – Mid Year Check-In
Welcome and I hope you had a safe, happy, and enjoyable 4th of July holiday! I typically use this time of year as a fantastic opportunity to weigh-in on my 12 month goals for the year and see where I am at. This allows me to take stock on what I have accomplished thus far, how much further I have to go, and any course correcting I may need to do, to achieve my goals within my designated time-frame. So, where are you at for those goals you set back at the beginning of the year?
If you are like most people, this is more like a “crap I haven’t made any progress on those New Year resolutions, and now the year is half over”, moment of realization. This certainly can bring with it a fair amount of angst and frustration, particularly if it was a truly aligned goal. Meaning it was something that you were passionate about when you set it, and you had every intention of going after that goal. If you are like most of those same people, the first couple of times you set relatively big goals, you put it out there without a real plan, then you may have made some effort towards achieving your goal, and unfortunately, quickly gave into the temptations of comfort and your normal routine.
This is very common and worse yet, very likely for most people, UNLESS they have a structured system and program to follow. For instance, you decide to lose 30 pounds, so you start working out, again, and you push yourself trying to make up for lost time, only to wake up sore the next day or two after a few days in the gym and decide this isn’t worth it and you quit within the first week. Others, get through that first week and continue to work out, but after 3 weeks surely, they should have lost 30 pounds or at least 15 pounds, they have unrealistic expectations, so they quit.
The next group, stays committed to the gym, but because they didn’t change their diet, they don’t see any meaningful results, so after weeks, maybe even a month or so, they then quit. Unrealistic expectations are often a big deterrent from staying with your goals. People fail to realize that it may have taken months and potentially years to get your body where it is, it will certainly take more than a few weeks to make a noticeable difference to get their bodies back where they want.
Even still, there are other groups of people who miss goals for a myriad of reasons. They could be, not planning appropriately for inevitable delays either with resources or knowledge. You may find that you are waiting for other people to complete a task that you assigned and they don’t follow through, so now you are stuck. You picked a partner to help with your goal, and they aren’t holding up their end of the bargain. You needed to do research, but didn’t set the time aside to complete it and now you are delayed, until this is completed.
Regardless of the reasons, there will be set backs and delays from time to time. How to manage those challenges, will determine the likelihood of whether or not you will achieve your goals. From managing expectations, to dealing with unexpected challenges, to new developments that you didn’t expect, or just staying on course with your goals daily. These are all reasons why people get off course and ultimately quit on their goals.
The good news is there is a way to ensure that this doesn’t happen to you in your attempt to achieve your goals. One of the best ways is to have a team to support you, Success is a team sport, and there is no such thing as a self-made man or woman. Anyone who has ever achieved anything significant in life, had the support of a team. That team could be a partner, life a friend or spouse, it could be a mentor, it could be a group that you meet with to keep you on task, or it could be a coach, like a fitness coach. I recently wrote about the value of such roles in my blog series “Your Success Team.”
