So, you sat down with a pen and a piece of paper, or you used a whiteboard, or maybe you even used a Goal Setting kit. Either way, you went on a journey and invested time to explore what you would really like to achieve in this life. You have identified the right set of goals, you made certain that they were measurable, achievable, and time based. You included your strategies, tactics, and daily action steps to embark on your journey. You’re ready to move forward with those next steps and hurl yourself down this new path towards your goals. But how would you like to increase your odds of achieving your goals by, oh, I don’t know, let’s say 1000%? Think that will improve your chances?
Now, remember, these five tips are intended to be used along the path of achieving your goals. These are not a replacement for your current strategies and actions that you have laid out, these are tips intended to be used in conjunction with those plans you designed. Consider them as the added fuel to help ensure you race past the finish line, rather than stopping before you get half way to your goal like many, or worse yet, quit shortly after starting like the vast majority of people. If you are using my 10-step plan as outlined in “Success with Goals – Designing Your Life with Purpose”, then you have your action plans, this is the extra stuff I wrote about to give you that edge!
1. Take care of yourself:
I am referring to physical as well as your mental health, whether you have a fitness goal you are focused on or not, achieving life changing goals is demanding work, both physically and mentally. You must remember to stay rested, nourished, and hydrated, physically, as well as staying mentally sharp. Think about it, if you are trying to achieve something you have never accomplished before, it will require a significant amount of energy. Getting enough rest each day will help you recharge daily and prepare you for the rigors of your challenges. Additionally, eating right and exercising, will only help provide more fuel to keep your energy levels high. Remember that you don’t want to forgo your health in the pursuit of your goals, or you might not live to appreciate achieving them.
2. Stay focused:
You might have a piece of paper, or a whiteboard with your goals written down, or you might even have a bunch of cool pictures of your goals posted on your dream board, but to succeed you need to stay focused on those daily activities each day. There will be a number of distractions each day vying for your attention, the shiny new tactic, some other fun thing to do, there will always be something that will be more enticing than the tasks you will do to achieve that life-changing goal. It will be easy to sell yourself on today I will take a “day-off”, however those usually come in bunches and add up quick. That one day easily becomes a few, then a week, don’t cheat yourself of the enjoyment of knocking off that handful of challenging tasks that will lead you closer to your goals every day!
With good discipline, you will eventually learn to overcome these distractions and maintain your momentum. Just direct your attention to the task at hand, and you'll be good.
3. Be steadfast:
There will be a lot of disruptions and setbacks, and sometimes it will feel like anything and everything is trying to derail you from your goals. Realize this, right here, right now, this is just “Life”, “The Universe”, “God”, (whatever you believe) testing you on how bad you want this goal.
You are not immune to failure, no one is, and all the work you did to put your plan together does not guarantee you will achieve your goals. In fact, there will be a few hardships, barriers, and set-backs before you achieve your goal, particularly if it is a big or life-changing goal. Your commitment will be tested multiple times during your pursuit, so remember to try, and keep trying, and most importantly, never give up!
4. Pour your heart into it:
Identify your goals and throw yourself into your efforts. Some work might appear to be particularly tedious, even draining at times, but there will be tasks that you will thoroughly enjoy as well. Remember them during tough times as each step taken is a step towards your goal and ultimately when your momentum builds, you will find yourself moving at a faster pace than you ever thought possible! Don’t just go through the motions, be acutely aware of everything that you are doing while in the moment. Remember, the goal may be what is keeping moving forward each day, but the real benefit or reward is the personal growth that you are attaining in the process. Who you become in pursuit of your worthy goals is by far more valuable than the short-term trophy or reward you gain by achieving that goal.
5. Share, share, share:
Immersing yourself in your work does not mean you lose yourself in it and create an imbalance between your loved ones and your work. You are going to have to work through stressful times, so it’s only natural that you would want to share with your loved ones and stay in touch. You need to ensure that they support you in your goals, so that they don’t deter you from what you are trying to accomplish, however, it’s great to have your support system helping to spur you on!
You may also find that they will be helpful in keeping you honest in your goals. If they are interested in your best interests, they will help ensure you don’t give up on yourself as well and that will be helpful on those toughest days. Whether they help with accountability or with cheerleading, the more support you have, the better your odds of achieving your goals.
Now, off you go on your journey to success. I wish you all the joy in this world, continue to share, work hard, and NEVER quit, and I assure you, you will reach your biggest life changing goals!
Till next week,
