Ok, I must ask, and many of you may be unwilling to accept or admit, but how many of you have already abandoned your 2018 New Year’s resolutions? Be honest with yourselves, are you still trying to hold onto it at least, or did you completely give up already? Did you start smoking or drinking again, give up on your diet or exercise routine, start waking up later already? Don’t worry, I get it, I’ve been where you are and still struggle with the same challenges we all do! The difference is I have a better plan, a system to ensure consistent daily progress towards my goals, do you?
You see, where many goal setting plans or programs fall short, is that they don’t help you prepare for our real-world circumstances. Meaning, they are often predicated on a perfect-world scenario that doesn’t exist in most people’s lives. For instance, you make the best decision to lose 25 pounds this year. You even join a gym, buy healthy groceries, hire a trainer, you have it all set up and are ready to crush it this year to be ready by summer, so you will look and feel great!
You see the problem is, you have had to work late 5 nights over the last two weeks. Your friend, from out of town, came to visit and you guys had to go out Friday, which led to a few drinks and a long night. You slept in and missed your workout with the trainer and besides, you are so damn sore. Not to mention, you have been so busy, you didn’t get around to preparing your meals. So, now much of those healthy groceries you bought went bad and you won’t have time to make your meals today, so that likely means a quick lunch at some fast food restaurant.
The next thing you know it’s been a week and you haven’t seen the inside of your gym and now your trainer is off the next couple of days and your food has gone bad. You haven’t lost any weight and you prepaid your trainer for months in advance and you wasted about $100 on groceries that went bad, oh yeah, and did I mention how sore you still are? Like I said most plans don’t teach you how to prepare for these circumstances.
I learned several things over the years of working with people to set and achieve their goals. Whether it was trying to hit a sales or income target, or to achieve some life goal such as a weight loss, to earn a new promotion, or start their own business, one thing particularly that I learned was that the Universe is going to test how bad you want this goal. It is going to attempt to trip you up, put obstacles in your way, and tease you with false hope while you are on your path. And the only way you will be successful in achieving your worthy endeavors, is to have the best laid plan to win.
When I made my 10-step plan for effectively setting and achieving goals, I incorporated step number 6 which is “Acknowledging Challenges and Obstacles”. This means, you list out any potential challenges, obstacles, distractions, and anything else that may get in your path to achieving your goals. By preparing for the setbacks, before they happen and that you know are likely to occur, you are better prepared for them when the inevitable does happen. For instance, you must know that when that friend comes into town you’ll likely want to spend some time, maybe even go out, but you’ll need to know how to moderate that activity.
Another example is, those groceries were a great idea, but you need to set aside some free time and spend a few hours prepping your food for a week at a time, this ensures you have meals ready and prepared, otherwise there is a high likelihood you’ll end up at some fast food restaurant. And what about your schedule? You must adjust your schedule so that you get to the gym at the best possible time for you. I know this doesn’t work for everyone, but I strongly recommend doing it first thing in the morning, as it is almost the only way I know I will get my workout in each day.
When you are making your plans, you must think ahead about what will likely distract you, whether that’s a project at work, your friends, your own bad habits, whatever it is, you must consider all the s you up when they happen. Because they most certainly will come up.
The good news is, we are only a few weeks into the new year, and if you are still committed to achieving those goals you set out for in 2018, I have a program that will help you. I have a series of workshops scheduled over the next couple of months to help you set up your plan. Now, if you are not local or can’t make it to one, and the book helped but you could use some help with your own designated plan, check out my pre-recorded webinar where I lead a group of people through the 10-step process. You can go through the entire 3-hour workshop at your own pace in the comfort of your own home or office: www.EricWhitmoyer.com/store/c3/Services.
Or maybe even sign up for one of my coaching programs for more individual help, which you can do here: www.EricWhitmoyer.com/coaching.
Thanks everyone, here is to an even more empowering 2018, stay with those goals and make 2018 your year! Until next time.
