Can you believe it, it feels just like yesterday my wife and I were sitting at home on New Year’s Eve drinking our traditional bottle of Dom Perignon champagne, watching the ball drop, and trying to stay up until midnight. Three months have passed, and the year is cranking along, we are now officially over 25% of the year completed. So, with an opening like that, where do you think my article is going today? Yep, you guessed it, time to talk about where you are with your goals…
If you are like most people, you have moved on from your New Year’s resolutions, disregarded your best laid plans, and are quietly living your life of frustration and desperation, hoping for things to get better. Now, if you are one of my dedicated followers, then you know this is a fantastic opportunity to assess where you are and consider any course corrections necessary to keep your goals on track for the rest of the year. As a matter of fact, you should have broken those one-year goals into 3-month goals, and by now, you should have recognized how close or far off you were to that 3-month target.
If you did stay the course, then you already know what you should be doing, keep pushing forward and make certain to readjust your next 3-month goals accordingly, spend 30 minutes to an hour analyzing your action plans for the next 3 months and make certain you are on track to hit or even exceed your half-way point goals. Remember, taking time to assess where you are and how things have been working, then making the necessary adjustments is how major goals get achieved!
Spending time analyzing where you are and where you want to go, as well as what has been and has not been working, is not wasted time, it’s how productive people get things done. And, the better you get at this process, the more things you can and will accomplish! I remember the quote from Abraham Lincoln; “Give me 6 hours to cut down a tree and I will spend the first 4 sharpening the ax.” There are a few ways you could interpret that quote, but what I think of in this context is, make sure your plan is good, and you have the right tools, before starting your project.
Achieving a life changing goal, is not a task that is as straight forward as chopping down a tree, it is convoluted and difficult, and it will take twists and turns along the way. There will be setbacks and disappointments along with wins and successes, so you must have a strong plan, to know where to start and where you are going, in case you get off the path, as you likely will over time.
Remember, this is a process, and it requires skill to keep assessing where you are and course correcting accordingly. This process is not hard, AND it guarantees you will eventually achieve your goal if you are persistent, but you must follow the guidelines and not deviate each time you get distracted, and you can’t lose heart. Also, don’t be surprised if your current actions are much different than your original plan, if you are adapting accordingly, you have found a better course of action, and that is great news, especially if you are progressing and improving.
Lastly, don’t lose heart if you are no further along then when you started back in January, because I have good news for you as well! You don’t have to wait till January to create a new plan or revise the previous one. You can do it right now, TODAY! Just pull my book out “Success with Goals” and jump to Chapter 5, follow the step by step process till you have a solid plan, then go take action today on those goals. If a HUGE, life changing, 1-year goal is too much for you to wrap your head around right now, then just focus on a key goal that you could feel good about accomplishing in the next 3 months.
We can simply start with something a bit smaller, but still very significant. You can prove to yourself that you can do it, and the confidence you gain will be helpful to push forward for the next 3 months. You can do this, I know you can, you have the skills necessary to change your life and turn things around, or to take your life to the next level!
Tune in next week Tuesday to hear about how my first 3 months have worked out thus far in 2018. I have some exciting news to share and it is all because of my goal setting process, as well as a few other tactics that I have developed over the years. I will share my updates and what has been working for me, as well as what isn’t working. I can’t wait to share!
Thanks for tuning in and following!
