Last week, I wrote a blog reminding everyone that as of April 1st, we were officially 25% of the way into 2018 and I asked each of you to assess where you were with your goals for this year. Now that you have taken time to consider where you are and how your goals are coming along, I thought I would share with you where I am at for my goals for 2018. In full transparency, I am going to share what I started with and how things have progressed since the beginning of the year.
Let me first start with 4th quarter last year, as my 2017 had a series of high and low notes that played into how 2018 has shaped up. As you know, I had begun the branding of my EricWhitmoyer.com business a few years ago in anticipation of transitioning to my consulting career in the coming years. Last August, I published my first book, and saw healthy sales but missed my goal of Best Seller status by a very small margin. Additionally, in my career at my day job, the company I worked for over the last 11 years, had sold to a larger company and as an Executive Director, I thought there would be some significant opportunity for me to grow with this new company.
When it was apparent that the new organization wasn’t going to be a good fit for me, I began to look for other options, after securing an opportunity as a VP of Sales at a competing company, the role which had been my goal for the last 3 years or so. The company that acquired us, decided that I was not a good culture fit and severed me enacting a non-compete clause, and ensuring I could not take this VP role. I received a severance package that was initially not commensurate with my annual compensation, and after weeks of challenging legal discussions and negotiations, I finally got what I deemed a fair severance. By this time, it was about a week or so before Christmas.
I spent approximately the entire month of December in limbo trying to sort out my career and deciding what I was going to do. My Consulting and Marketing business was not mature enough to support myself and my family and a year was not likely enough time to get it there. As always, when I am trying to sort out big difficult decisions, I referred to my goals, considered what I wanted to accomplish, and ultimately built out my plan. After being quite frustrated for about 6 weeks, I finally decided that there was another option for me to jump into, since I couldn’t work in the industry I had spent the last 20 plus years building.
I had spent some time with a friend of mine learning about the transportation industry, which I have had some experience in during the early 1990’s when I had an ice cream distribution business. It seemed a bit impractical given my recent experience over the last 20 years, but I saw a strong potential opportunity nonetheless. I had invested some money in a project and had spent some time learning about this business over the last 8 years and I saw an opportunity to grab some market share and grow a solid business.
Around the end of December, an associate of mine was transitioning his business and looking for a project to work on. I was able to hire him as a consultant and by leveraging his insights, knowledge, and contacts, along with a few other key employees, we have grown from zero revenues on January 15th to a little over $110,000 just in the month of March alone. This week, we will close two deals that will add an additional 9 trucks to our fleet, increasing our fleet size to 15 trucks and allowing us to grow our revenues to approximately $250,000 per month. To add to this, we have already closed one significant contract that would keep at least half of our fleet working the entire year and we are being presented with enough work to support at least 25 trucks.
My goals for 2018 were a bit varied and somewhat dynamic as I didn’t know what all might manifest, however, I set bold and aggressive goals for the year in my multiple business ventures, as well as some key personal goals. Here are some updates on where I am and what I am doing to ensure I hit all or at least most of my goals.

I hope you find value in reviewing my goals for 2018 and more importantly how I am progressing with these goals. Each of them offers their own set of challenges and opportunities while I am in pursuit of the rewards of achieving these goals. This year has certainly been transitioned from a year of personal development growth, which what I had originally planned for, to a year of Career and Business growth focus. I am excited because this is something I am exceptionally good at and thrive on, but managing this high level of growth and activity while keeping some semblance of balance will be a major key this year.
