If you picked up on the typo in the title, then likely you also caught the reference to one of my favorite movies, “The Pursuit of Happyness” with actor Will Smith. The pun is intended to capture your attention and remind us that the pursuit of Happyness is just that, a pursuit. However, it doesn’t have to be a pursuit in vain. Happiness is often alluded to as a place where everything is perfect, a euphoric place where everyone is just happy. Well, I am here to tell you that place doesn’t exist, sorry to burst your bubble.
Happiness is a feeling or state that everyone seems to be striving for, but it is not a destination, it is something you create for yourself. In this chaotic world, peace of mind, bliss, a comfortable state, or in other words, happiness, can be a very rare find, because people are looking for the destination of “Happyness”.
However, let us change that for you by re-wiring your thought processes and help you embrace that you decide to be “Happy” and you control if you are in fact, “Happy”. How and what you do, say, and allow yourself to feel is what determines your state, so you can actually make yourself happy!
Happiness does not have to be a mystery that alludes the majority and is reserved for the select few. Let me also add, that happiness is not just for those who are phenomenally wealthy, as I have met many miserable wealthy people. Conversely, it is not reserved for those that have chosen to strip away all their worldly possessions to live the life of a pauper so as to reduce their stress in life.
I’ve seen countless people struggle to make ends meet while trying to be “Happy” by not taking that promotion, or avoiding investments that can be difficult. No, Happyness is a state that we create for ourselves that helps us cope and manage in our normal everyday lives with purpose and meaning, while not getting caught up in all the BS of life. So, let me introduce you to six tips that have been proven to help deliver happiness in life.
Being an optimist is of prime importance when it comes to finding happiness. Thinking negatively only needlessly creates more stress and worry about things that can otherwise be solved quite easily, if one just looked at it from a calm fresh perspective.
Living in a world where terrorist attacks and bombings are a common occurrence, tolerance seems to be, again, the most important trait to not just find happiness for yourself but the entire world. Respecting other people’s opinions not only gives you time that you otherwise would have spent arguing, it also lets you become more accepting of other beliefs, contributing to the diversity in the world.
You would be surprised at how many people lead a happy life just by being courteous. Just a simple smile to the person next to you entirely changes their attitude towards you, resulting in a friendly conversation, exchange, or even a possible friendship. Try doing that to a bartender or a waiter at your favorite restaurant. Who knows you may even end up getting complimentary stuff?
Nobody trusts an irresponsible man or woman, and neither would you. So, make sure that people's perception of you is that of a truthful, honest person who is responsible for any duties assigned to you. Remember, your reputation is the one thing that determines to others the kind of person other people can always count on and contentment that follows after keeping your word even in difficult circumstances will lead to the happiness that you want.
Give to Charity
Inner happiness is as important as outward happiness. For that kind of contentment, a simple act of charity is probably the best way to go about it. It does not necessarily have to be financial aid to someone in need; it could be anything from donating your old clothes, volunteering for social services, and many other such causes.
Treat Everyone Equally
Lastly, treat everyone equally, because that is what we as humans ought to do. In return, you will find love from all walks of life that are in your community, and this too leads to happiness. The Golden rule of treat everyone how you would want to be treated, likely is something we could all benefit from remembering.
